SAFECONNECT SHOULD I REMOVE IT INSTALL
Install User-Agent Switcher for Chrome or Firefox and set it to automatically change your user agent to anything other than Windows or OSX or Linux (game consoles work best) when you visit or 198.31.193.211. You will still sometimes find that you are redirected to the login page, but thankfully there is an easy workaround due to the fact that the Safeconnect software doesn't work on many devices.
Unfortunately, simply changing DNS will not fix every problem with Safeconnect. Thankfully, all Google services are included on the list of allowed addresses, so we can just use Google DNS, Follow the instructions there to set your router or computer to use Google DNS and only Google DNS. Safeconnect also contains a firewall which will make connections to address ranges outside the allowed range unreliable when you are not logged in. The stopgap solution is to simply use a DNS server other than the one provided by the university, however you cannot use just any server. Safeconnect primarily works through DNS poisoning attacks, which are not completely avoidable but can be mitigated.
It then forces you to log into your UCSC blue account again several times per day, which effectively prevents you from completing any large downloads. The residential network requires you to install a bit of spyware on your computer and log in with your UCSC blue account before you can connect.
